The Smart Search Module is an advanced NLP-based search engine developed by MOR Software to modernize data retrieval for a prominent Japanese client. Over a 12-month period, our team delivered a 40 Man-Month (MM) solution that replaces traditional keyword matching with intent-based AI. By leveraging Python, FastAPI, and Text Embedding, we built a scalable architecture on Azure and Databricks to handle complex, large-scale search operations with high precision.

The customer

The client is a large-scale enterprise based in Japan that manages extensive product catalogs. As a market leader, they require a digital infrastructure capable of providing seamless, intuitive navigation for their customers. They partnered with MOR Software to transition from rigid, legacy data systems to a more intelligent, user-centric search experience.

The challenges

The client previously relied on traditional search methods that were increasingly inefficient for their growing database. These legacy systems struggled with complex queries and lacked the semantic understanding necessary to interpret user intent. A major pain point was the specialized processing required for Japanese text; without sophisticated linguistic handling, the system often failed to deliver relevant results for nuanced language queries, leading to decreased user satisfaction.

The solution

To resolve these issues, MOR Software engineered the Smart Search Solution, a hybrid framework combining Full-Text and Semantic Search. By utilizing NLP and Text Embedding, the solution understands the context behind every query, not just the characters. We implemented specialized filters tailored for Japanese text processing, ensuring accurate handling of the language's unique structural nuances. The final architecture, powered by Elasticsearch and PySpark, ensures that search results are both instantaneous and highly relevant, even across massive datasets.

The outcome
